CASE STUDY 3 : WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT AND ERGONOMICS

WHAT IS ERGONOMICS??

- Ergonomics is the science of designing the job to fit the worker, rather than physically forcing the worker's body to fit the job.

CASE STUDY 1

Deere And Company.
1) SUMMARY.
Deere and the company have created several farm equipment. The article relates that workers in the company have experienced ergonomics. The company has been experience from the quality or working in awkward position for long hours. Also, the workers always lifting and carrying heavy object weighing around 75 pounds. It can effect sustained awkward position to the workers . Also, it can cause stiff neck that commonly be attributed the action during working hours .What the company do to prevent the issues are they trained their employees on the use the video displays. Other than that, the initiated some ergonomics program using the NIOSH education. Even though, the company experience a lot of issues about ergonomics, they still know how to prevent the situation.

2) ERGONOMICS ISSUES IN THE WORKPLACE :

  • Working in awkward position for long hours.
  • Lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing around 75 pounds.
  • Bending and kneeling of workers for prolonged times.
  • Workers with hand tools like wrenches with awkward wrist positions.

3) CONSEQUENCES THE COMPANY HAS TO BEAR DURING THE ERGONOMICS ISSUES:

  • Sustained awkward postures - Risk of MSD is increased when joints are worked outside of this mid-range repetitively.
  • Can cause stiff neck - We are often surprised that the cause can commonly be attributed to action undertaken during our working hours.
  • Can cause headaches & migraines- Working for too many hours with the wrong lighting can cause headaches.
  • Lengthy periods of repetitive activity- It will make a job or task slow down and take time to complete it.

4) METHODS THE COMPANY TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEMS :

  • They started an 8-hour ergonomics training program.
  • They also trained their employees on the use of video displays.
  • The production design department was assigned a full time ergonomist.
  • The company initiated some ergonomics programs using the NIOSH education.

CASE STUDY 2

Silicon Graphics Inc.

1) SUMMARY.

Silicon  Graphics, inc was a high-performance computing manufacture, producing computer hardware and software. The company have 3, 800 workers. The article related that workers in the company have experienced ergonomics.Employees in the company have suffered a back injury. Also, employees always lifting and carrying of heavy object  It can effect poor postures can lead to herniated disc and overall muscle weakness . Also,  it can cause Carpal tunnel syndrome This is a wrist injury which is one of the most common injuries caused by poor workstation ergonomics a workplace. What the company do to prevent the issues are they hired training consultant to evaluate the workstations for ergonomics conditions. Besides, that company provided compulsory ergonomic training to their employees. Even though,  the company experience a lot of issues about ergonomics, they still know how to prevent the situation.

2) ERGONOMICS ISSUES IN THE WORKPLACE :
  • Back injuries.
  • Lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
  • Awkward postures while working.

3) CONSEQUENCES THE COMPANY HAS TO BEAR DURING THE ERGONOMICS ISSUES:

  • Posture can suffer-poor posture can lead to herniated disc and overall muscle weakness.

  • May develop a musculoskeletal disorder- Musculoskeletal Disorders, or MSDs, are issues that affect the body’s movement. The musculoskeletal system consists of bones, ligaments, joints, cartilage, muscles, nerves, discs, and other connective tissue.

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome – This is a wrist injury which is one of the most common injuries caused by poor workstation ergonomics a workplace. This injury occurs from the lack of wrist support, such as when using a mouse on the computer or not having an ergonomic keyboard.

4) METHODS THE COMPANY TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEMS :

  • They hired an ergonomic training consultant to evaluate the workstations.
  • Provided compulsory  ergonomic training to their employees.
  • Purchased new ergonomics office equipment.
